Artist Statement for March 2008 Exhibit

I desire simplicity
Yet I am surrounded by complexity.
I cast my net, attempting to capture something meaningful from the endless and repeating tide.
Meanwhile, TIME sails past me on an impatient wind.

Pathways and Echoes

Pathways are connectors or tracings left by travels in the mind and in the body.
Echoes are collections of voices and sounds, remembered or imagined, repeating and diminishing in the distance. These travels and rememberings call up symbols, shapes and colors, giving abstracted form to intangible things in my experience.

Working out of a love of material, I combine drawing and painting with borrowed techniques from printmaking and bookbinding. The use of many layers of paper, slick and transparent or thick and translucent, gives a physical structure to the paintings. Working on both sides of a layer I allow discarded and faint images to emerge as shadows; while glazing with acrylic paints and inks, I create subtle echoes in color and shade. Suggestive of time and tide’s transient nature, I use erasers as well as brushes and pens, taking away in one spot, adding back in another.

Like stones in a path, every mark, color, form, and completed work leads to the next. Always surprising. Always something new to discover.
