Melinda Hannigan has been awarded a prestigious residency at Rocky Neck Art Colony in Gloucester, Massachusetts, the oldest US working art colony. She will spend September 10th to October 9th living on the wharf in a studio/apartment, painting, opening the studio to visitors, and generally demonstrating what talent from the opposite coast looks like. This program accepts only 3 artists each year, so this is indeed an honor. Melinda Hannigan will also have a show at Taste (cafe) at the Seattle Art Museum. The show opens on September 14th. The date of the reception will be announced later because of Melinda's residency on the East Coast. Melissa Stern is also featured in an article in the March/April issue of NY Arts Magazine. An image and discussion of Stern’s drawings may be found in an article titled "Nostalgic Confessions". Stern explains her use of 1940s images and their thematic references and her artistic vision of our social groupings. View this article at www.nyartsmagazine.com. Type in 'Melissa Stern' in the Search field to locate her piece. Lorna Nakell was awarded a residency at Weir Farm Art Center in Conneticut and attended in September of 2008. The organization provides an Artist-in-Residence program on the farm of American abstract artist J. Alden Weir. The site was designated a National Park by Congress in 1990, and the Art Center preserves the buildings and landscape that have inspired artists for the past 120 years. Some of the work created by Nakell during her residency are seen in her current exhibit. These pieces clearly make reference to the topographical elements preserved by Weir Farm intended to inspire the artistic imagination. Nakell was especially drawn to the old stone walls on the Farm and has incorporated their images in several of her works. |
