Severn has drawn inspiration from the work of Maya Lin along the Lewis and Clark portage sites on the Columbia River. Randy Mccoy & Michael Hoffman
Opening Night Reception Friday, January 8th, 5 to 8 pm.
Fetherston Gallery is pleased to present new work by favorite Seattle artist, Randy McCoy, and introduce work by new artist, Michael Hoffman.

Randy McCoy presents new abstract paintings composed of colorful forms applied atop more subtle abstract backgrounds. He uses thick applications of strong colors that seem to sit atop his canvases but which draw the viewer more deeply into the work as a representation of the natural world. McCoy also gives us prints composed on copper plates fashioned of discarded bits from the biotech world that are detailed images in blue and white but with rich dense forms. Finally, we have a sculpture fashioned from an old truck McCoy found on Vashon Island. Its shape echoes the loops and curves of his paintings and ties together his previous paintings of automobiles he placed on his abstract backgrounds.

Michael Hoffman's new work also references the act of painting itself. Hoffman uses the motion of his body to as a natural pendulum to direct the paint onto the surface of his canvas. He applies multiple rounds of color washes of thinned oil paints that give the works a richly colored depth and glossy surface. The results are bold graphic compositions with stripes and circles that offer both the linear rigidity and organic fluidity found in nature. Hoffman feels this order/disorder tension reflects our societal fascination with technology and our need for the softening human element provided by the artist's sensibility.
Nov 12th, 2009 - Dec 19th, 2009
Elizabeth Jameson & Small Works by Various Gallery Artists
Opening Night Reception Friday, November 12th, 6 to 6 pm - Special Musical Guest: Lushy.
Fetherston Gallery is pleased to present "Post-Bellum", a new collection of works by Elizabeth Jameson. Jameson presents a follow-up to her previous exhibit that was based on ideas generated by the Crimean War and the prominence of women arising from that conflict. This exhibit looks at a post-bellum world, whether that is post-bellum an apocalyptic event, another war, or a world ruled and contaminated by corporate interests. She continues to express her interest in fashion and clothing as expressions of a society that is both dangerous and anxiety-provoking. Her photograph represents a fashion catalogue layout, but the meticulously dressed mother and child are also wearing gas masks for protection. Her large pastels on paper depict anonymous men and women whose bodies are completely covered, including their faces that are covered by gas or protective masks. Jameson's world view is, however, tempered by a sense of hope and style that is expressed with her brightly colored palettes and softened outlines and forms.

In the North Gallery, there is a display of Small Works representing many of the Gallery's artists. These smaller pieces are offered as representative of the artists' esthetic, but as pieces appropriate in size and composition for that particular spot that needs a work that is small but still important. We encourage you to support the art community by considering a small work of art as a holiday gift--to yourself or someone you love.
